Leon and Jonas’ Mum said:

“Our journey with Charnwood began when we started attending their Opportunity Group. As a mum to twin boys, one of whom has cerebral palsy, I found many baby groups incredibly difficult. Leon was unable to sit, stand, or walk independently and needed my full support to participate, which often meant I couldn’t give Jonas the attention he needed. Trying to meet both of their needs at the same time was overwhelming and, at times, isolating.

For the first time, I felt like I wasn’t alone in navigating life with a child with additional needs. The staff provided not only practical support, but emotional support too. They were the only baby group I attended that actively encouraged parents to take a moment for themselves while staff cared for the children. They were there when I needed a shoulder to cry on, checked in when the boys were unwell, and even gave up their own time in the evenings to help me understand forms and processes that I found overwhelming.

I genuinely don’t know how I would have managed those early years without them. No matter how difficult things felt, Charnwood was the one place I knew I could attend every week and feel understood, supported, and welcomed.

When the time came for the boys to start preschool, there was only one place I wanted them to go. Even so, like many parents of children with additional needs, I was anxious.

Would people understand Leon when I wasn’t there? Would they learn what he found difficult and know how to help him? Would they recognise the signs of frustration and know how to calm him? Would he be included and able to participate alongside the other children?

Those worries disappeared remarkably quickly.

The staff at Charnwood genuinely care about every child. Nothing was ever too much trouble. The same level of care, attention, and understanding was given to Jonas as it was to Leon. They took the time to truly get to know both boys as individuals and understand their unique personalities and needs.

What stood out most was their commitment to inclusion. Every child was encouraged to take part, regardless of ability. The children learned and played together, creating an environment where differences were accepted and celebrated. Both of my boys have grown up understanding that everyone is different, and that is perfectly okay.

The impact Charnwood had on Leon has been extraordinary. They helped him develop ways to communicate his frustrations, build his confidence, and participate fully in activities that I once worried might not be possible for him.

One of my favourite memories was during their Paralympics-themed term. Leon had the opportunity to see other wheelchair users achieving amazing things, which had a huge impact on him. He completed his lap alongside the other children, walked to the front to receive his medal, and was so incredibly proud of himself. It was a moment I will never forget.

I also loved seeing him participate in activities such as Say G’day, where he was fully included in the stretches and exercises rather than being left sitting in his wheelchair. Charnwood always found a way to ensure he could join in, contribute, and feel part of the group.”
